Teaching RESPECT (July 11)

RESPECT

Lilian asked us to teach a lesson on respect and following rules to the preschoolers.

We thought about some of the behaviors that we see such as fighting over outside toys, to be next to a teacher when making a circle, hitting each other when sitting in rows, pushing to be first, etc.

We came up with 5 ways to show respect.

Listen to your teacher
Do not hurt others
Do not destroy school property
Share/Take turns
Speak with kind words

Ashley, Owen and I went through each of the rules and demonstrated "No respect" vs "Yes Respect!"

For example, I would be the teacher and Ashley and Owen played the students and modeled not listening vs listening. The kids really got a kick out of some of the "No respect" demonstrations like fighting over a frisbee or pushing to be next to the teacher when making a circle.

Then we practiced making a circle with respect and how to make a line and sit in rows. We practiced sharing a ball and taking turns. By the second day they were doing much better.

It cracked me up to hear one student telling another No Respect! when they tried to take away their ball on the playground!
